Sam Adams Is Brewing a Beer Dedicated to Ruth Bader Ginsburg

It’s no secret that brewers love to experiment. From Peep-infused beer to pickle beer, wacky new brews celebrating something trendy in pop culture is about as normal as, well, normal beer. This month, a major beer giant has instead created a new beer to honor a legacy.

Sam Adams is dedicating its new Belgian Brut IPA to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, immortalizing her comment about the need for more female justices. When asked when there will be enough women on the Supreme Court, Ginsburg famously responded, “when there are nine.”

A portion of the proceeds of When There Are Nine will be donated to Pink Boots Society, an organization that promotes women in the beer industry. The Boston brewery will debut the brew in its taproom on March 29 with a celebration including a plank contest benefiting the ACLU’s Women’s Right Project, which Justice Ginsburg founded earlier in her career. Ginsburg is well-known for her dedication to fitness.

According to the event invite, the brewery originally wanted to name the beer Brut Bader Ginsburg, but its legal team didn’t think it was such a great idea. Ah, well.
