A Florida surfer in Jacksonville Beach caught more than waves on Saturday when a shark bit his elbow, local news site WJXT News4Jax reports. The shark attack knocked professional surer Frank O’Rourke off his board, leaving behind bloody puncture wounds.
O’Rourke reportedly overlooked medical attention, instead seeing his injury as an opportunity: He used his shark bites as bait to get a few free drinks.
“He immediately went to the bar because he was like, ‘Hey, I got bit by a shark,’” RJ Berger, a friend and witness, told WJXT. “And people were like, ‘I’ll buy you drinks.’ So he hung out at the pier.”
Pier beers alone couldn’t heal him, though. A lifeguard on-site helped O’Rourke get properly patched up, although he could still use a few stitches.
If you ask us, the incident would make a great addition to Shark Week, which began on Sunday. (In case you live under a reef, Shark Week is an annual week-long television event on the Discovery Channel.)
