Puffing Billy Steam Vodka has launched

The vodka, from The Borders Distillery, is steamed through charcoal rather than the more usual method of being filtered as a liquid

The company said that in creating the new vodka, it ignored the ‘multiple filtration cliché adopted by most premium vodka brands’, and instead put the emphasis back on taste.

Puffing Billy Steam Vodka is made from malted barley and named after the rare Carter head still that it is steamed through. It is made at The Borders Distillery in Hawick, Roxburghshire, which, when it opened in April 2018 became the first legal Scotch whisky distillery in the region since 1837.

‘Vodka is an important segment of spirits but it has lagged behind other drinks in recent years, making it ripe for re-invention,’ said the head of marketing, Rod Gillies.

‘Our distillers developed a unique way to make vodka – pot-distilled malted barley spirit, re-distilled in Carter’s head and steamed through charcoal. It’s the only vodka in the world made this way.’

The 40% abv vodka has a rounded smoothness and creamy texture. The company says it works well with berry fruit flavours; sharp and dry flavours, as well as citrus and sour tastes.
